FAQs

What questions can I clarify with the sinology mobility coordinator?

The sinology mobility coordinator can provide you with information on questions relating to the Sinology study programmes and your stay abroad. This includes particularly questions about the recognition of examinations taken abroad and the organisation of your studies before and after your stay abroad. He/ she can also give you recommendations for the choice of destination or a suitable scholarship programme.

Who can I ask about the application modalities of the scholarship programmes?

The scholarship provider is always the point of contact for binding information regarding the application conditions of the scholarship programmes.

I would like to clarify questions about organising my studies abroad. Who can I ask?

The Mobility Coordinator for Sinology can only advise you on course selection abroad and the recognition of examination results. All other questions regarding the organisation of studies at the host university (course registration, accommodation, etc.) must be clarified directly with the host university.
For the Non-EU exchange programs of the University of Vienna, you need prior approval before receiving the scholarship, confirming that your course selection abroad can be recognized by the Sinology department and that you can fulfil the minimum ECTS requirements (Preliminary Recognition Notification).

What do I need to do to get the Preliminary Recognition Notification (engl. Fachbegriff vorgegeben?) signed?

To prepare, please create a clearly arranged table with:

1)      The courses you plan to attend at the host university, including the title, a course description, the performance requirements, and a link to the course catalogue.

2)      For each course at the host university, please include the equivalent course in Sinology (including ECTS) that you wish to have recognised for the course abroad.

If you plan to take language courses, first send this table along with the completed Preliminary Recognition Notification form to Stefanie Yu (MA) at the Study Service Centre for Sinology (stefanie.yu@univie.ac.at).

Once the language courses have been coordinated, or if you do not plan to take any language courses, send the table and the form to the Mobility Coordinator for Sinology for preliminary review. If they approve your study plan, forward the table and form to the Study Program Director responsible for Sinology, who will sign the Preliminary Recognition Notification after reviewing it.

How are the ECTS credits determined that I must earn abroad for the exchange programme of the University of Vienna?

The ECTS are based exclusively on credits of the University of Vienna, which are recognised for coursework completed abroad. Credits or the like of the host university are irrelevant.

According to which principles are examinations taken abroad recognised?

Whether credits earned abroad can be recognised for courses in the Sinology study programmes depends on the content, level, performance requirements and scope (semester hours per week, SWS) and is decided on an individual basis.

As a rule, courses for the Sinology International elective module are relatively easy to be recognised. There are no equivalent courses in the Sinology programme. Normally, 8 SWS abroad are recognised for 15 ECTS credits Sinology International. If there are fewer SWS, correspondingly fewer ECTS credits can be recognised. You can have academic courses, language courses and other courses recognised for this module. The prerequisite is that the courses conclude with a grade.

For courses in other Sinology modules, language courses are usually easier to recognise than research/ academic courses. In any case, the content, level, performance requirements and scope (semester hours per week) and level must correspond as closely as possible to the courses in our study programme. This is often difficult, particularly in the case of higher-level seminars. As a rule, the following are not recognised: M8, M7, classical Chinese, STEOP. Further, you cannot complete entire modules abroad. Exceptions to this are language modules and Sinology International.

The study programme that I specified in my Preliminary Recognition Notification before the start of my stay has changed. Who do I have to inform about these changes?

If your study programme has changed, it is important to inform the Mobility Coordinator of these changes in order to avoid difficulties with recognition after your return. If he/she agrees to your changes, contact the relevant SPL to ensure recognition.
