Studying Language in Chinese-Speaking Regions

Study visits in Chinese-speaking regions are highly recommended by the Study Programme Directorate of Sinology. In the bachelor's programme, a stay of one to two semesters is especially beneficial during the second year of study to enhance Chinese language skills.

The following scholarship programmes are available for a semester or year abroad as part of the Sinology degree programme. For binding information regarding individual programmes, please consult the websites of the respective scholarship providers.

University of Vienna Scholarship: Non-EU Exchange Programme 

  • Partner universities of the University of Vienna in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore.

  • Application Timeline: Applications are typically due in October/November for the following winter and/or summer semester. 
  • Benefits: Tuition fee waiver, monthly allowance.  

Huayu-Scholarship of Taiwanese Ministry of Education

  • Taiwan
  • 3 or 6 months
  • Monthly allowance
  • Recommended: Participation of the TOCFL language exam
  • There are currently 2 spots (?) available exclusively for students of the Sinology department in Vienna
  • Parallel applications for the Huayu Sinology Scholarship and the general programme are possible

Scholarship of the China Scholarship Council 

  • Mainland China
  • Limited choice of university/ place of study
  • Language degree: duration of (1-) 2 semesters
  • Tuition fee waiver, accommodation in student residence, monthly allowance

Confucius-Institute Scholarships

  • Mainland China
  • Limited choice of university/ place of study
  • Language degree: 1-2 semesters
  • Tuition fee waiver, accommodation in student residence, monthly allowance
  • Prerequisite: HSK language examination
